Of Mod Podge Makeovers & Crafty Upcycles

For the uninitiated, decoupage is the art of repurposing the old by cutting and pasting decoratives (and this is where things get a little wild), like paper, patchwork, pressed flowers, lace, fabric, ribbons, beads, buttons what have you, before the grand finale –a gleaming coat of varnish, to preserve both the finish, as well as the finished product.

TWC recommends drooling over pages and pages of decoupage by John Derian (on google of course, unless you are taking a trip to NYC anytime soon), if you want a taste for how to waste not. We guarantee love at first sight.

(Not so) Shabby Chic

The sheer number of things you can decoupage once you master the art is mind-boggling. You can cover, add colour, embellish and spruce up pretty much all kinds of surfaces – wood, terracotta, glass, metal, even some kinds of plastic (although with plastic, we recommend testing a small area before completing your project, to ensure the glue holds.)

We’re already seeing lace doilies on mason jars – dreamy tea-light holders for balmy evenings, floral patterns on old tin cans – such perfect rustic planters, comic book collages on tired serving trays to create some instant pizzazz, and perfectly pressed flowers – translucent treasures from your own back garden, lovingly adhered to miniature white wine bottles. Can you?
