Décor lovers know PMS inside out – except we’re talking about the New York headquartered Pantone Matching System, which is essentially a standardized color reproduction system.

PMS allows designers to "color match" specific colors when a design enters production stage, regardless of the equipment used to produce the color and has since, been widely adopted by graphic designers and reproduction and printing houses. FYI, Pantone recommends that PMS Color Guides be purchased annually, as their inks become yellowish over time. Color variance also occurs within editions based on the paper stock used (coated, matte or uncoated).

Hues Your Daddy?

Since 2000, the Pantone Color Institute declares a particular color "Color of the Year". Twice a year the company hosts, in a European capital, a secret meeting of representatives from various nations' color standards groups. After two days of presentations and debate, they choose a color for the following year. The results of the meeting are then published in Pantone View ($750), which fashion designers, florists, and many other consumer-oriented companies purchase to help guide their designs and planning for future products.

This year’s colour is called Greenery, and like all other design nerds we’re celebrating this small but lush and verdant victory. Because who doesn’t want to usher in a soft lilting palette that’s as fresh as spring?

A fragrant sprig of mint, the delicate flutter of butterfly wings, the smell and feel and damp of freshly mown grass, wildflowers swaying in the breeze in meadows that stretch achingly under a summery sky, sparkling waters of a babbling brook – moss covered and gurgling over smooth river rock, the grey-green shade of a grove of trees that’s just perfect for a long lazy picnic lunch, the tempting green of mangoes that hang low in our mothers’ orchards… the first fruit of a new season. Can’t you just breathe it all in? That something in the air which you can’t help but smile at, wish you could dance to?
